About Lysning Innovation Consultants
Who is Lysning Innovation Consultants
Lysning Innovation Consultants was founded in 2024 by Dr. Volkert de Villeneuve. Volkert holds a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Utrecht, Netherlands, and has over 15 years of experience in product and technology development. He has held global technical roles at Unilever and IFF, with exposure to fabric, home and personal care, and fine fragrances.
Background At IFF, Volkert led an encapsulation development team, delivering multiple innovative technologies. He developed a globally successful fragrance creation model and significantly improved competitive product analysis through new analytical tools and data structures. His work built robust cross-functional intelligence networks, integrating patent, regulatory, analytical, marketing, and commercial knowledge.
(Research) Interests Volkert is dedicated to enabling better knowledge-based decisions and promoting sustainability. In his free time, he enjoys exploring nature, learning languages, and reading. He lives in Voorburg, Netherlands, with his wife and three sons.
What’s in a Name
I have always been intrigued by languages and I have always thrived outdoors. While thinking of a name for my consultancy on technical applications of scents, there had to be some international wordplay involved. Lysning covers all these aspects.
Nature and Innovation – A “lysning” in Norwegian is a clearing in the forest where light suddenly breaks through. When I’m outside, there are these wonderful moments where solutions to long-standing problems just strike you. In Norwegian, this is called an (opp)lysning.
Scent – Lys also brought me back to the “Fleur-de-Lys,” the French name for the lily, which has a long history of being used in important life ceremonies. Its scent is a crucial component of many fragrances.
Consulting – When pronounced in English, Lysning sounds very similar to listening—which, to me, is the starting point for any consultant. Finally, going back to Norwegian, Lysning is not far from Løsning, the word for solution!
